The Institute for Spatial History Innovation (ISHI) is pleased to announce its Fall 2026 calendar of events, featuring workshops, seminars, and opportunities for faculty, students, and the broader Pitt community to explore the possibilities of spatial history and the spatial humanities.This semester’s programming brings together scholars and students from across disciplines to share research, develop new projects, and consider how space, place, and geography shape the ways we understand the past and present.
The semester will include the Spatial Humanities Works-in-Progress Seminar, a collaborative forum where faculty and graduate students can share projects in development and receive constructive feedback. The seminar will feature presentations by scholars from Pitt and beyond, with projects exploring topics including rhubarb cultivation and regional identity, mapping contemporary China, the memorial landscapes of Belarus, the Islamic world, vacant land in Swissvale, and the maps and landscapes of early modern Bombay.
ISHI will also host the Place, Space, and Critical Geography Reading Group, which brings together faculty and students interested in theories, methods, and case studies related to place, space, and critical geography. The group will explore key texts from fields including history, anthropology, geography, sociology, urban studies, and art and architectural history.
In addition to these recurring programs, ISHI’s Fall 2026 calendar includes opportunities to learn more about ongoing spatial history research and the tools and methods that make this work possible.
