Publishing

ISHI publishes structured data and scholarship on global historical geography, making these resources available through the World Historical Gazetteer (WHG) to support research, teaching, and digital scholarship. The Institute also supports the creation of pedagogical resources for educators and students on topics in the spatial humanities.

Historical Gazetteer of Central Asia

Historical Gazetteer of Central Asia, a new resource composed of ten datasets, was published on the World Historical Gazetteer website in the fall of 2025. Because "Central Asia" has long had shifting and contested boundaries, the dataset publication illustrates how various primary and secondary sources have defined the region over time. It also includes a scholarly essay written by the WHG team in collaboration with Dr. James Pickett. The project was completed with support from the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES).
